Sufism -- Sufi literature -- Islam and politics -- India

The essays in this book emanate from a conference entitled "The Political Role of Popular Islam (Sufism)", held in Bikaner between 1st and 3rd of October, 2003.

The votaries of 'Reformist Islam' have generally perceived Sufism as something going beyond the premises of Islamic shariat. They have also renaciously held the belief that a preponderance of Sufic thought in society in an index of its decline.
The ground reality, however, has been chat Sufi thought spread at a fast pace in the Indian subcontinent, drawing a favourable inclunation. The Sufi figures, irrespective of their historicity or otherwise have provided solace and inspiration to all communities, tribes and castes. Sufism became a significant element of elite culture as well, reflecting itself in music, literature, poetry, and in the find arts. It was this popularity that prompted the state to patronize Sufis to reach out to civic society.
The important issues and paradigms of the study of Sufism, politics and society occupy a vast canvas, and only some of these have been articulated, perhaps for the first time, in the present volume.
