Sufism -- Central Asia -- History

Over the past three decades, Devin DeWeese has pointed up numerous blind spots in our understandings of Sufism in Central Asia. These interventions, parceled out across various journals and edited volumes, have not always been absorbed into more general histories of Central Asia and Sufism as quickly as one might hope. The collection of twelve such studies in a single volume from Ashgate’s Variorum collected studies series should go some way to making these important arguments, and the sources on which they are based, more widely read.
Most of the essays in this volume are framed as correctives to flawed understandings of Central Asian Sufi phenomena, a rhetorical position which sometimes undersells studies covering wide swathes of previously uncharted territory.
