| Soul and Sword : the endless battle over political Hinduism | Sengupta, Hindol | xv,203p. | Rowman & Littlefield | 2023 | 6,930円 | Hinduism and politics -- India -- History This is the first intellectual history of political Hinduism from its medieval origins to current-day India. It provides the ideological context of India’s rise economically and politically in the world in the last decade, illustrating not only where political Hinduism comes from, but more importantly, where it seeks to go. It provides an intellectual framework not only to understand the rise of Narendra Modi and his politics in the world’s largest democracy, but also India’s political, economic, and diplomatic choices as it negotiates its space as a rapidly rising, billion-strong democracy in a fluid and precarious world order. | |
| Royals and Rebels: the rise and fall of the Sikh Empire. | Atwal, Priya | 312p ills. | Hurst | 2020 | 5,787円 | Punjab -- Kings and Rulers -- Ranjit Singh, Maharaja of the Punjab, 1780-1839 -- History -- 1700-1899 In late-eighteenth-century India, the glory of the Mughal emperors was fading, and ambitious newcomers seized power, changing the political map forever. Enter the legendary Maharajah Ranjit Singh, whose Sikh Empire stretched throughout northwestern India into Afghanistan and Tibet. Priya Atwal shines fresh light on this long-lost kingdom, looking beyond its founding father to restore the queens and princes to the story of this empire's spectacular rise and fall. She brings to life a self-made ruling family, inventively fusing Sikh, Mughal and European ideas of power, but eventually succumbing to gendered family politics, as the Sikh Empire fell to its great rival in the new India: the British. Royals and Rebels is a fascinating tale of family, royalty and the fluidity of power, set in a dramatic global era when new stars rose and upstart empires clashed. | |

| 'We are Lovers of the Qalandar': piety, pilgrimage, and ritual in Pakistani Sufi Islam. | Frembgen, Jürgen Wasim | xix,170p. illus. | Oxford U.P.(Pakistan) | 2021 | 3,960円 | Sufism -- Rituals -- Pakistan This book is about Pakistan's most popular Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar whose shrine in Sehwan Sharif is one of the most fascinating sancturies in the Muslim world. The present ethnographic study is organized around three themes: piety, pilgrimage, and ritual. Thus, its focus is first on visual culture and 'material religion' as well as various aspects of religious aesthetics which highlight how sacred spaces are constructed and shaped. Secondly, it deals with the year-round pilgrimage, mainly investigating pilgrims from Punjab (including a unique life history of a female 'Sufi lineage' from Lahore), but also discussing remarkable ritual agents in the cult. The third theme is the spectacular trance dance known as dhamāl. On February 16, 2017, a suicide bomber executed a horrible massacre among the dancing devotees. This work, which is the fruit of the author's field-research between 2003 and 2015 in Sindh and Punjab, aims to contribute to a 'Sufism observed' which often seems to be neglected in mainly text-based Sufi studies. | |
| Annexation and the Unhappy Valley: the historical anthropology of Sindh's colonization. | Cook, Matthew A. | xii,297p. illus. | Oxford U.P.(Pakistan) | 2021(15) | 4,900円 | Asia Indus River Valley -- British colonies -- Ethnohistory -- 1800-1899 Annexation and the Unhappy Valley : The Historical Anthropology of Sindh's Colonization addresses the nineteenth century expansion and consolidation of British colonial power in the Sindh region of South Asia. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach and employs a fine-grained, nuanced and situated reading of multiple agents and their actions. It explores how the political and administrative incorporation of territory (i.e. annexation) by East India Company informs the conversion of intra-cultural distinctions into socio-historical conflicts among the colonized and colonizers. The book focuses on colonial direct rule, rather than the more commonly studied indirect rule, of South Asia. It socio-culturally explores how agents, perspectives and intentions vary--both within and across regions--to impact the actions and structures of colonial governance. | |

| Dethroned: the downfall of India's princely states. | Zubrzycki, John | viii,337p. | Hurst | 2023 | 5,974円 | India -- Kings and rulers -- Politics and government -- History --1919-1947 In July 1947, India's last Viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten, stood before New Delhi's Chamber of Princes to deliver the most important speech of his career. He had just three weeks to convince over 550 sovereign princely states--some tiny, some the size of Britain--to become part of a free India. Once Britain's most faithful allies, the princes could choose between joining India or Pakistan, or declaring independence. This is a saga of intrigue, brinkmanship and broken promises, wrought by Mountbatten and two of independent India's founding fathers: the country's most senior civil servant, V.P. Menon, and Congress strongman Vallabhbhai Patel. What India's architects described as a "bloodless revolution" was anything but, as violence engulfed Kashmir and Indian troops crushed Hyderabad's dreams of independence. Most princes accepted the inevitable, exchanging their power for guarantees of privileges and titles in perpetuity. But these dynasties were still led to extinction--not by the sword, but by political expediency--leaving them with little more than fading memories of a glorified past. | |

| Honour Unmasked: gender violence, law, and power in Pakistan. | Shah, Nafisa | xxvi,291p photos. pap. | Oxford U.P. (Pakistan) | 2023(17) | 4,899円 | Family violence -- Dispute resolution (law) -- Honor killings -- Pakistan Sindh The practice of karo kari allows family, especially fathers, brothers and sons, to take the lives of their daughters, sisters and mothers if they are accused of adultery. This volume examines the central position of karo kari in the social, political and juridical structures in Upper Sindh, Pakistan. Drawing connections between local contests over marriage and resources, Nafisa Shah unearths deep historical processes and power relations. In particular, she explores how the state justice system and informal mediations inform each other in state responses to karo kari, and how modern law is implicated in this seemingly ancient cultural practice. | |
| Silent voices, untold stories : women domestic workers in Pakistan and their struggle for empowerment | Shahid, Ayesha | xxiii,247p. | Oxford U.P. (Pakistan) | 2020 | 2,178円 | Pakistan -- Women household employees -- Legal status, laws, etc This book is a socio-legal study about law, empowerment and access to justice for women domestic workers in Pakistan. The study advances the argument that women's lives are shaped by sharp gender and socio-economic disparities leading to unequal power relations vis-a-vis their employers, state and society. Access to justice through the formal legal system is very often contingent upon the socio-economic position of the user. Women in domestic service have to negotiate the barriers of poverty and inequality before being able to employ the law as their ally. To analyse the efficacy of formal law as a measure for achieving justice for women domestic workers, a small empirical component is also included in the study. | |
