| Law and Muslim Political Thought in Late Colonial North India. | Hussain, Adeel | 256p. | Oxford U.P. (India) | 2022 | 7,458円 | Law -- Political aspects -- India -- History -- 20th century -- Iqbal, Muhammad, Sir, 1877-1938 -- innah, Mahomed Ali, 1876-1948 During the 1930s, much of the world was in severe economic and political crisis. This upheaval ushered in new ways of thinking about social and political systems. In some cases, these new ideas transformed states and empires alike. Particularly in Europe, these transformations are well-chronicled in scholarship. In academic writings on India, however, Muslim political and legal thought has gone relatively unnoticed during this eventful decade. This book fills this gap by mapping the evolution of Muslim political and legal thought from roughly 1927 to 1940. 1: Introduction 2: In Search of Vulnerabilities Lost 3: Shahidganj and the Burden of Time 4: Jinnah: A Thinker of Existential Survival 5: Iqbal and Combative Constitutionalism 6: Conclusion | |
| Siva in Trouble : festivals and rituals at the Paśupatinātha Temple of Deopatan (Nepal) | Michaels, Axel | xx,285p photos. | Oxford U.P. | 2008 | 10,772円 | Deopatan (Nepal) -- Paśupatinātha-Tempel -- Hinduism rituals -- Fasts and feasts The town of Deopatan, three kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, is above all famous for its main sanctum, the temple of Pasupati, the "lord of the animals," a form of Siva and the tutelary deity of the kings of Nepal since ancient times. By its name alone, the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims each year and has made itself known far beyond the Kathamndu Valley. However, for the dominant Newar population the town is by no means merely the seat of Siva or Pasupati. It is also a city of wild goddesses and other deities. Due to this tension between two strands of Hinduism -- the pure, vegetarian Smarta Hinduism and the Newar Hinduism which implies alcohol and blood sacrifices -- Siva/Pasupati has more than once been in trouble, as the many festivals and rituals described and analyzed in this book reveal. Deopatan is a contested field. Different deities, agents social groups, ritual specialists, and institutions are constantly seeking dominance, challenging and even fighting each other, thus contributing to social and political dynamics and tensions that are indeed distinct in South Asia. |
