India successfully defended Southern Afghanistan and the strategic Kheybar pass against Muslim arms for more than three centuries.
Gradually the converted Turks set up strong kingdoms - nptably the Samanids and the Saffarids - in Khurasan and Sistan, virtually independent of the Arab Caliphate. The kingdom of Zabul was estinguished thrpugh treachery by Saffarids in 870 CE. The Brahmana Hindu Shahis who had acquired control of the kingdom of Kabul continued to successfully guard the Khyber Pass till 1000 CE. This glorious chapter of Indian history hs, so far, reamained under theveil.
This balance of power was upset by the Turk Sultanate that emerged at Ghazni.
