One of the earliest texts of Mahayana Buddhism dating back to the 1st century CE. The Khotanese Sudhanavadana, Commentary. The Khotanese Sudhanavadana, Commentary. De Chiara, Matteo vii,228p Harrassowitz 2014 9,848円 Avadāna -- Sudhanāvadāna -- Khotanese The Khotanese Sudhanāvadāna, Commentary/ Matteo De Chiara The Sudhanavadana is a 10th-century poem written in Khotanese, a Middle Iranian Language spoken in Central Asia and used to compile Buddhist works. The agreeable tale relates a previous life of Buddha: that of prince Sudhana and his wife, the fairy princess Manohara. At the core of the work is Sudhana’s journey in search of his lost consort. The poem is preserved in three virtually complete manuscripts and seven fragments all found in Dunhuang. The manuscripts and fragments must originate in a single source, but what remains are two distinct recensions: indeed, it may be assumed that, in order to conform to the needs of different audiences, the story was modified in the course of time to obtain two recensions that still run in parallel but are independent from each other, either one being complete in itself. This volume marks the completion of the author’s study of Sudhanavadana. It contains the philological commentary on the text and an etymological glossary.

The Buddhist Philosophy of Universal Flux: The Buddhist Philosophy of Universal Flux: Mookerjee, Satkari xlvii,448p 古書 Motilal 1997(1935) 330円 Buddhism -- Hindu philosophy -- Dignāga The philosophy of the Medieval school of Buddhism was ushered into existence by Dignaga and Dharmakirti and later on systematised and developed by Santaraksita, Kamalasila, Ratnakirti and others of repute. The metaphysical and epistemological sides of this school spread far and wide, even in remote days, for they influenced not only the Brahmanical thought but also the non- Brahmanical speculations in Indian philosophical systems from the third century A.D. to 1000 A.D. But a systematic presentation of the philosophy of this school had not been attempted so far. The present book is designed to fulfil this long-felt need. It presents a clear exposi-tion of the philosophy of critical Realism as expounded by Dignaga and his school.
Reading Emptiness: Buddhism and literature. Reading Emptiness: Buddhism and literature. Humphries, Jeff xxii,169p pap. SUNY 1999 2,772円 Hearn, Lafcadio, 1850-1904 -- Criticism and interpretation -- Buddhist literature -- Philosophy Reading Emptiness connects ancient Buddhist attitudes and ideas with postmodern theory and aesthetics, concluding that the closest thing in Western culture to the Middle Way of Buddhism is not any sort of theory or philosophy, but the practice of literature. The book draws on scholarship and criticism in literary theory, philosophy, and science to speculate about the possible common ground between literary and Buddhist practices, aiming not so much to elucidate the ancient traditions of Buddhism as to seek ways in which literature might be integrated into a truly Western practice of Buddhism that would remain philosophically true to its Eastern roots.
Passionate Enlightenment: women in Tantric Buddhism. Passionate Enlightenment: women in Tantric Buddhism. Shaw, Miranda xix,291p ills. pap. Princeton U.P. 2022(1994) 4,347円 Women in Tantric Buddhism -- India The crowning cultural achievement of medieval India, Tantric Buddhism is known in the West primarily for the sexual practices of its adherents, who strive to transform erotic passion into spiritual ecstasy. Historians of religion have long held that the enlightenment thus attempted was for men only, and that women in the movement were at best marginal and subordinated and at worst degraded and exploited. Miranda Shaw argues to the contrary, presenting extensive new evidence of the outspoken and independent female founders of the Tantric movement and their creative role in shaping its distinctive vision of gender relations and sacred sexuality.

Here, instead, the reader is invited to explore the works and ideas of India’s most important Buddhist philosophers in a manner that takes seriously the weight of their philosophical thought.

Philosophy's Big Questions: comparing Buddhist and Western approaches. Philosophy's Big Questions: comparing Buddhist and Western approaches. Emmanuel, Steven M. (ed.) xv,317p pap. Columbia U.P. 2021 5,943円 Buddhism and Philosophy -- East and West Philosophy’s Big Questions: Comparing Buddhists and Western Approaches, edited by Steven M. Emmanuel, contains eight essays that each do what the title suggests: examine one of philosophy’s big questions through the lens of “Western” philosophy in dialogue with Buddhist philosophy. These essays cover topics ranging from epistemology (e.g. Chapter 2: “What Is Knowledge? Knowledge in the Context of Buddhist Thought” by Douglas Duckworth) to ontology (Chapter 3: “Does Reality Have a Ground: Madhyamaka and Nonfoundationalism” by Jan Westerhoff) to ethics (e.g. Chapter 7: “How Much Is Enough? Greed, Prosperity, and the Economic Problem of Happiness: A Comparative Perspective” by Emmanuel; Chapter 8: “What Do We Owe Future Generations? Compassion and Future Generations: A Buddhist Contribution to an Ethics of Global Interdependence” by Peter D. Hershock). There’s a mix of theoretical-leaning essays (e.g. Chapter 4: “Can Consciousness Be Explained? Buddhist Idealism and the ‘Hard Problem’ in Philosophy of Mind” by Dan Arnold) with practical-leaning ones (e.g. Chapter 1: “How Should We Live? Happiness, Human Flourishing, and the Good Human Life” by Stephen J. Laumakis).
