Islamic shrines -- Muslim pilgrims and pilgrimages -- History
The holy cities, the pilgrimage and the world of Islam : a history from the earliest traditions until 1925 (1344H)/ Sulṭān Gahālib Al-Qu'aiṭī
“Mecca and Medina, the world’s most forbidden cities, have long been a symbol of mystery and fascination to outsiders...In this unique, ground-breaking book, one of the world’s leading experts in Arabian history investigates the colourful, often astonishing story of these two great cities. Carefully sifting fact from legend, Sultan Ghalib describes their architecture, religious life, society, and politics, and shows how they have played a pivotal role in the history of Islam." T.J. Islamic rituals -- Islamic reliquaries -- Islamic civilization
Nineteenth-century philologist and Biblical critic William Robertson Smith famously concluded that the sacred status of holy places derives not from their intrinsic nature but from their social character. Building upon this insight, Mecca and Eden uses Islamic exegetical and legal texts to analyze the rituals and objects associated with the sanctuary at Mecca. Integrating Islamic examples into the comparative study of religion, Brannon Wheeler shows how the treatment of rituals, relics, and territory is related to the more general mythological depiction of the origins of Islamic civilization. Along the way, Wheeler considers the contrast between Mecca and Eden in Muslim rituals, the dispersal and collection of relics of the prophet Muhammad, their relationship to the sanctuary at Mecca, and long tombs associated with the gigantic size of certain prophets mentioned in the Quran. |

Iraq -- History -- Zanj Rebellion, 868-883
"The revolt of African slaves in Iraq from 869 to 883 C.E., known as the revolt of the Zanj, was one of the great rebellions of world history and the first major uprising in the history of the African diaspora. The Zanj were black slaves shipped overseas from East Africa to work in salt mines and plantations under the harshest conditions. Their fate resembled that of slaves sent across the Atlantic, and their revolt triggered racism against blacks among Arabs. Like the Spartacus revolt, it threatened a world power, in this case the Abbasid empire. The revolt also signified a unique instance of solidarity among Africans in the diaspora, when black soldiers of the Caliph deserted and joined the revolt." "Popovic's book is the only full-length study in any major language on the revolt of the Zanj. Scholars of slavery, the African diaspora, and the Middle East have lauded and extensively quoted from the original French edition of Popovic's work." |

Mongols -- Eurasia -- Art -- History -- To 1500
Humanism, secularism, pluralism: these were the spirit of the age in the exchange system known as the Mongol Empire. So R. Prazniak finds in "Sudden Appearances". Prazniak’s starting place is art history, but her study of artistic exchange opens out into a wide view of the intellectual and cultural world under Mongol globalization in the 13th century. |

Offering a fuller understanding of the complexities and particular patterns of state formation in regions where tribes have exercised a significant influence, this volume focuss on the continuing existence of tribal structures and systems in contemporary times, within contemporary nation-states. The contributors offer hypotheses as to why these groups have managed to survive and what impact they have had on modern states. |
